The Clubman Chair explores the intersection of automotive culture and industrial design. Its form, materials, and methods echo those found in automotive design, specifically within the Resto-Mod (restoration and modification) industry.
A bent-tube frame, inspired by the roll bars and chassis of these vehicles, defines the chair’s structure. Hand-stitched leather components draw from tailored interiors and are suspended from the frame in a quiet balance of tension and precision. A series of leather-wrapped metal details reinforces this sense of suspension, allowing the seat to appear as though it floats within its structure.

At its core lies a signature X-detail, where a precise composition of 6-inch centerline radius bends meet. These tubes and bends reference the accessible simplicity of DIY automotive fabrication. The exterior is finished in hand-stitched, wet-molded leather, while a system of 3D-printed and laser-cut steel components forms the chair’s structural heart.
Envisioned for spaces that celebrate automotive design and culture, from museums and showrooms to lounges and private garages. The Clubman Chair brings both versatility and presence to any environment, automotive or otherwise.
Like a bespoke vehicle, it invites personalization. Frame finishes, upholstery, and detailing can be specified to suit individual preferences. The piece shown here, designed and built in-house for this competition, features stainless steel paired with natural veg-tan leather, materials chosen to patina and evolve beautifully over time.
The Clubman Chair offers a tactile and visual experience grounded in craft, engineering, and narrative, an homage to the makers, drivers, and creatives who find beauty in precision.
